From time to time I have undertaken the challenging
task of restoring an old ship model. In the past years
I have seen many long forgotten disordered models
taken from dusty attics, or lumber rooms, and
brought to my work bench with the owner intention of
have them restored once more to life. Such an
instance is the contemporary model of the HMS
guard ship "Aurora" 1865. After spending a
considerable amount of time in a coal bin
somewhere in Montreal, she was found by the
present owners and moved to Vancouver. During
transport her rigging was even more damaged by the
moving company. In 1998 I took her to my shop and
after 800 hours of cleaning, drying, conserving,
remaking of parts that were impossible to save, I
managed to bring back to life this model. Although
she was a crude model, it was for a long time a
strong point of attraction for my workshop, due to her
wreck like appearance. |
